Havells V3 Yurbo Pedestal Fan
This product is for those people who have a higher budget. The Y3 Yurbo has a 450mm Blade sweep which is quite higher than the other products. The blades are also made of steel instead of the regular plastic, thus making it consume more power (about 100W of power). But all these extra numbers are worth it. It can throw a lot of air giving about 110 cubic metres of air per minute, which is about double that of the other products.
The design is good although the speed regulator is placed at the side which might be unreachable from the front. Yes, it has a 3-level speed regulator. Also, since the body is made strong and the blade of steel, it is heavy and not favourable if you want to move the fan more often.
The assembly of this product may be difficult if you have not assembled a fan before otherwise, it is fairly easy.
Other than that, this electric fan comes with a 2-year warranty. However, you should not have any with this product considering how greatly designed and how durable it is made. Do think of buying it if your budget is high and you want your pedestal fan to be small but quite powerful at the same time.

Usha Helix Pro High Speed Pedestal Fan
Another Usha product in this list and this one is similar to the previous one. It is a 400mm blade sweep fan with a white body and Blue blades in the safety grill. The plastic body and 2300 rounds-per-minute make it good for bigger rooms where a normal wattage pedestal fan cannot work well.
This higher RPM is due to the higher wattage of this fan. It runs at about 130W making it a bit damaged on the bill, but the higher wattage does reflect on its performance. The airflow out of this fan is good and it can easily cool a room in a few minutes. It has a 3-level regulator although it lacks the timer feature, which would have been appreciated.
You can adjust its height according to your need with up to 10 inches. It also lacks features like oscillation control to control the swing angle. Such a feature is available in some products in this price range.
The fan is on the noisier side but worth it for the airflow, it gives out. The body feels sturdy and durable and it weighs around 6.5kg which is quite good considering the strength it has. Assembling this product is also easy.
It comes with a 2-year warranty and getting any type of problem resolved should not be an issue with this product for this fan comes from Usha. Its services should be available all over India.

ANSIO High-Speed Pedestal Fan
ANSIO is a UK brand and therefore not well known in India. This fan can provide a lot of airflow for its normal 400mm size. This is due to the 120W consumption of this fan. Due to this power, it is noisier and not prevalent for a quieter environment.
The added feature of timer control is a necessary and appreciated one. You can put up to 2 hours of a timer which is a good feature to use in the Winters.
It is provided with 3 levels of speed regulation. So, you can adjust its speed according to your comfort. The tilt of the fan can also be rotated along with the adjustable height.
The three levels of speed vary the speed from 1750 rounds-per-minute to 2700 rpm which is a lot higher than average fans in this price
Other than that, as mentioned the noise level is high and so is the vibration. But if these things are none of your concern you can consider buying it. It is easy to assemble and disassemble in case you want to clean it.
It comes with a 2-year warranty. ANSIO is not a well-known brand but they claim to provide quick and reliable service to its customers. So, if you are interested in buying a powerful fan from a not-so-well-known brand this is your option.

Buying Guide for Pedestal Fans in India 2020
Things to look for when buying a Pedestal Fan:
Motor Power (Wattage)
This is one of the most crucial deciding factors when selecting a Pedestal Fan. Motor Power is the amount of power(watts) the motor will consume when running. This is calculated as the rate of consuming energy per second of use since power is the ratio of energy and time.
If you want to get a brief idea of how much units of electricity a motor will consume, just divide the watt count with 1000 and you will get the units it will consume in one hour.
For example, if the wattage of an electric fan is 55W, then it will consume 0.055 units of electricity per hour. Multiply it by the rate at which your electricity board sells you electricity and you get the cost of running it for 1 hour.
Now, when selecting a fan, if it is capable of providing a high volume of air while not consuming much electricity, it is giving you the highest value. If we assume that product A is giving 65cmm of air and runs at a rate of 55W, and product B is giving 80cmm of air and rums at a rate of 100W then it would be smart to go for product A because it is providing more air for the amount of energy it consumes.
Rim diameter / Blade Sweep
Blade sweep is the diameter of the rim i.e. the shield inside which your blades rotate. It is beneficial if the fan has a high blade sweep. Higher the blade sweep, higher will the flow of air delivered.
However, sometimes other factors can affect the blade sweep and it can influence the fan to have a smaller blade instead. If the material with which the blade is made of, are delicate or made of lighter material, then having high blade sweep can instead damage the fan.
That is why it is necessary to consider blade sweep according to your needs of a consumer. If the fan will be used in a smaller room, a blade sweep of around 400 is more than enough. However, if the blade material is a stronger one, like steel or aluminium it can withstand higher airflow, but it would be beneficial to use it in a larger room otherwise it would be a wastage of energy.
Therefore, for Indian homes, where we usually keep pedestal fans in the bedroom, it is good to have a 400mm blade sweep or close to that. Lesser than that will lack the favourable speed and more than that will be energy waste.
The Fan speed is determined by counting the number of rounds the fan blade makes in one minute. This is a necessary factor because if the fan speed is on the lower side, then that means the fan is not efficient enough and lacks quality during manufacturing.
Do not go for higher fan speed if the blade material is weak or the room is small. If the blade material is weak, then high speeds can lead to damage to the blade and possibly to other components as well. Whereas, if you are using higher speed fans in a small room, it would be a waste of energy and at the same time, it can also cause the room to heat up instead because it will tend to push the same air that is removed out of the room.
For a medium-sized room, like a bedroom, an RPM (Revolutions per minute) of around 1300-1400 is good enough. Go for higher speed fans if your room is larger than typical because manufacturers usually keep their customers in mind when designing fans. So, they can have it calculated that what are the favourable speeds for an average Indian room.
Amount of air delivered per unit time
It is the amount of air the pedestal fan can throw in one minute. Most of the time it is proportional to the fan speed i.e. the RPM, but it can also vary based on the aerodynamics of the fan and the material used.
If we consider a case where we have two fans and both have the same RPM, however, if fan A has a different arrangement of the blade such that it is not aerodynamic and faces a lot of resistance then it will tend to consume more energy compared to fan B which is designed much better and runs smoothly and pushes out more air at the same time.
Therefore, it is necessary to consider the amount of air delivered when selecting a pedestal fan. It is measured in Cubic Meters per minute. In simple terms, it is the volume of air given out per minute. A stand fan for medium-sized rooms should have around 65 CMM of air delivery. However, if more air delivery options are available for the same price, then do consider buying that one instead. But make sure the blades are made of tough material and not get damaged easily.
Head movement and height adjustment
Such an option is necessary for pedestal fans today because unlike ceiling fans which are not adjustable to our needs, a pedestal fan should allow the user to adjust the machine’s height. A pole is provided in most pedestal fans for this to happen.
Head movement is the ability to rotate the head of the fan along the axis of the pole. This gives the user the ability to change the direction the fan is facing without actually lifting up the pedestal fan and make it move.
Height adjustment gives the user the ability to move the fan face up or down depending upon how the user wants it. It is a good feature that gives us the flexibility to control it without using other objects just to give it more height.
For a normal standing fan, one can expect a height adjustment of about 1 foot, which is good enough considering that heights of beds in India are not too high and we do not use bunker beds at home either.
For head movement, users should be given 3600 movements and the wire should be long enough to wind around the pole and not get too stretched when the head is rotated over the pole.
The material of body and blades
It is necessary that the material with which the body and blades are made are of good quality. Such factors affect the efficiency and longevity of the pedestal fan.
For the body, it is good if the body is made of hard plastic, so that it can lift the motor’s weight while it is in turned-off or running condition. At the same time, it should be too heavy that the pedestal fan can not be moved with the help of a second person. Giving a strong base also helps the fan sustain the vibrations produced by the fan motor.
When it comes to blades, make sure the plastic used for the blade is tough. Weaker blades will, of course, get damaged easily. If steel blades are used instead, make sure the power rate of the fan is high, otherwise, the motor would not be able to make the fan rotate at faster speeds.
For blades, if the plastic is used 55W is a good power rate, whereas, for steel or aluminium blades, a power rate of 100 or above is good enough.
Speed regulation, timer, remote and oscillation angle regulation
Speed regulators allow the user to regulate the fan speed so that they can find the perfect balance between the energy they can allow it to consume and speed at which they want it to rotate. It is better to run the fan at lower speed in the Winter season and higher speed during summer.
The timer gives the user the ability to set a duration for the fan to run after which it will turn back off automatically. This feature can be great for saving energy in Winters when they do not want the fan to run always. Many people have this issue where they want to run the fan only when they want to go to sleep, but once they fall asleep, they want the fan to turn off. This feature can be great for those people.
The remote control gives the user the ability to control the fan speed and turn it off using a remote. So, if you are on the bed and do not want to get up to manage the fan speed, this can be good for such situations.
Oscillation angle regulator allows the user to regulate the angle of rotation when oscillation mode is active.
- The speed regulation is usually given in 3-levels.
- The timer is usually given up to 2 hours.
- Oscillation angle is given in 0,30,60,90,1200
This one is obvious. Lower is the noise produced by the fan, better it would be for home. Try to find a good place where you can use the fan so that the least disturbance is caused by it. That is why people prefer using pedestal fans in shops where the noise level is mediocre, and it gets covered by the background noise.
You can expect about 60+ dB of noise from most fans. But do not let it get too high otherwise it can be annoying. If it is less than 60 dB, then it is suitable for almost all types of environments.
Assembly and cleaning
The ease in assembling is an important factor for a pedestal fan because this not only causes problems when you buy a fan, but it can also create an impression about the brand in the consumer’s mind, affecting the possibility of the consumer buying any other product of the same brand. This can also lead to negative publicity of the product where people can claim that X brand does not care about its consumers.
The cleaning part is equally essential. This can only be understood from personal experience. If the assembly part of the pedestal fan is hassle-free, then the disassembly of the product should also be easy. This gives the user confidence in cleaning the product more often and can help in positive publicity of the brand.
An electric fan should be given with at least 2 years of warranty, any more than that is good. It is also necessary the brand has a good repo of providing good service to their customers. If someone has issues with the product, they should be willing to help.
A beautiful design is necessary for any product. For a pedestal fan, people either look for a plain white colour scheme with classic design or they look for a modern look with a black + (some other colour) as a colour combination.
This depends on the customer. While keeping a good design, it should also be sturdy and strong with that design. If the design is good, but in order to obtain it they sacrificed the minimal strength of the machine then it would be of no use.
Type of Motion
The type of motion can be a great deciding factor. Pedestal fans are usually designed as either fixed, rotating or oscillating fan. At a good price point, most stand fans have oscillating motion. More about the type of motion will be discussed later.
How does a Pedestal Fan work?
A pedestal fan consists of 4 parts. These are
- The base
- The pole
- The motor
- The fan and rim
The pole is right over the base of the Pedestal fan. The base is expected to be heavy so that the body is balanced. This balance is necessary because the motor will be placed over the pole. The motor is attached with a screw.
The motor is attached with the blades and the blades are covered with the rim.
The motor is provided with electricity through the plug. This motor runs and produces mechanical energy. The mechanical is axially transferred to the blades that are radially attached to the centre of the shaft. It is made sure that the blades are lightweight and aerodynamically arranged so that the motor does not struggle in rotating.
The energy consumed by the motor depends on the size of the motor. If more energy is produced with a bigger motor, it can be used to power bigger blades in the fan.
For oscillating fans, another smaller motor is attached inside the same box, which gradually rotates the head of the pedestal fan without interrupting the motion of the main fan.
If the fan has a timer, then another analogue system is installed in the motor compartment to measure time using small-sized gears. It does not occupy much space, this can be added in most manufactured pedestal fans with investing some more money.
Assembly of a Pedestal Fan
- Place the pole over the base of the pedestal fan and tighten them using screws provided
- Attach the motor with the rear safety grill. Make sure that it fits right in the gap.
- For some models, the rear safety grill might be pre-attached with the motor. To attach the motor accordingly.
- Place the duo of motor and rear-safety grill over the pole and tighten them with the screws.
- Make sure the wiring is accessible and place the plugin the socket.
- Test run the pedestal fan for once to see if everything is running properly.
- If everything is fine, attach the front safety grill of the fan and tighten again with the screw given.
- In case of any difficulty, read the assembly guide provided in the box. In some cases, the assembly can be different for some brands or models.
Types of Pedestal Fans
Pedestal fans can be categorized into three types:
- Fixed Pedestal Fan
- Rotating Pedestal Fan
- Oscillating Pedestal Fan
Fixed Pedestal Fan
It is one of the oldest forms of a pedestal fan and was used in the 20th century. It completed the purpose of cooling the room when the ceiling fan was inaccessible for some people. But it has its own limitations. It has a fixed direction of throwing air and if you want to change its direction, you must move the whole fan from its position. This made it really uncomfortable for many people who wanted the air to spread all over a room or the place where they wish to use it.
This limitation led to the manufacture of rotating fan later on, which was better at spreading air in all directions.
Rotating Pedestal Fan
It has a rotating nature, but it keeps on rotating in 3600 without stopping or moving backwards. These rotating fans were used in some workplace at proper positions so that they could throw air in all the direction.
This also had a limitation. As mentioned, it kept on rotating in all directions, so it might direct air at a place where there is no need to.
Therefore, in the 21st-century Oscillating Pedestal fans started to manufacture.
Oscillating Pedestal Fan
It has a fixed angle range through which it will rotate, once covering that angle it will backwards to its original position. It can also be rotated manually to change its angle range at the position.
Oscillating fans became some of the most popular variety of fans to use. This was because these fans are usually made of polymers and metals like stainless steel, aluminium. They are more advantageous than other table or ceiling fans due to their extendable pole which allows the user to increase and decrease their heights according to their preference and also because they are cheaper than ceiling fans as well as easy to assemble.
As time went on we had more variations in the oscillating fans. First was:
Regulated oscillating pedestal fan
This pedestal fan had the feature of oscillating in a fixed direction, but not only that, but it can also regulate the direction of oscillation. That means if you want it to oscillate in a fixed angle of 600 of some direction, it is capable of doing that as well. Another few additions were done to the oscillating fan, which was:
Timer controlled pedestal fan
This pedestal fan had the feature to run only for a desired period of time, which in most pedestal fans was around 2 to 3 hours. This was timed in an analogue clock for handling it mechanically. Another addition to it was:
Remote-controlled pedestal fan
This pedestal fan gives the user the option to control the fan using a remote. Yes!! A remote. This remote has options like speed control, oscillation control, timer etc.
These days most budget stand fans are trying to manufacture these types of fans so attract more customers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a tower fan or a pedestal fan?
A tower fan is good for when you are looking for something that gives out cool air to a smaller area and has more extra features like temperature control, smaller blades and other accessories.
A pedestal fan, on the other hand, will be useful to be used in a room and to mildly cool the entire room. It will consume more energy and give fewer features if you have a low budget, but it will be better in the long run.
What specifications should I check when buying a Stand Fan?
The main elements to looks for are
1. The blade sweeps
2. The RPM
3. The airflow volume
4. The material
5. Power consumption.
Other than these, you can also look for extra features like
2. Oscillation regulation
3. Remote Control
Which will consume more energy: pedestal fan or ceiling fan?
Pedestal Fans are made of a lighter material and they also have smaller blade sweep; therefore, they consume less energy. For ceiling fans, the material used is stainless steel and its radius is also high, hence it consumes more energy.
Best place to buy fans from?
If you know a good dealer, you should consider buying from them. If such facilities are unavailable, then opt for online shopping instead. It can easily give you an idea of how a product is. With the complete specifications, and user reviews it will be easier to judge.
How much electricity do standing fans consume in comparison to other types of fans?
Compared to a tower fan, pedestal fans will consume more energy. This is due to its larger size and a larger capacity to cause airflow. But at the same time, you will get more airflow, which is favourable for bedrooms.
When compared to ceiling fans, it is much lesser. This is because ceiling fans are heavier and also larger in size. This causes them to require more energy to move. Therefore, for concentrated airflow, pedestal fans are better but for overall airflow, ceiling fans do a good job.
Owning a pedestal fan has become a necessity over a luxury these days. It serves a lot of purposes, like being used in homes when ceiling fans are not accessible or are incapable, it can also be used in smaller shops, because they are small and portable, unlike desert coolers which require a water supply and regular maintenance. If access to air is your first priority overcooling, consider buying a pedestal fan.
