12 Best Air Purifiers in India 2021 – Reviews & Buying Guide

With growing air pollution, it is almost impossible to breathe in pure air that does not contain contaminants that might affect your lungs. Most of us run away to the wilderness in search of fresh air to breathe in and calm our senses. But that is not the most feasible and economic way of avoiding pollution.

Many individuals have resorted to using face masks in public. Even so, masks are not really the best possible option, and neither are they comfortable to be worn for a long period of time.

But you think you are safe at home, right? Did you know that the air in your house is about two to five times dirtier than outdoor air? The only solution to this is the use of air purifiers.

Air purifiers can remove up to 99% of harmful airborne bacteria and seasonal allergens as well as allergens released by your pets, thus reducing your family’s chances of falling ill.

Air purifiers can also remove floating dust particles and free your house from odour.  This enables you to have a safe and fresh environment in your house.

Owing to the increasing air pollution in India, many well-known brands have come up with quality air purifiers that you can use at your home. But all of them might not be suitable for you.

If you invest in an air purifier, you have to make sure that it fulfils your purpose. The best model for you will depend mainly on the location of your house, the size of your room, and your top air quality concerns.

Apart from these, you will also have to look into its air filtration technology, make sure the filters used to meet the HEPA standards and also see if the noise levels are tolerable. The purifiers should not have a high maintenance cost and should be easy to operate.

Keeping these factors in mind, you might then want to compare the best available options so you can get the value for your money.

Mi Air Purifier 3 ( HEPA Filter and Smart App Connectivity )

Mi Air Purifier 3 ( HEPA Filter and Smart App Connectivity )

Xiaomi is best known as one of the largest manufacturers of smartphones in the present-day world.  For a few years now, the company has also been manufacturing air purifiers which are not only reliable but also affordable!

The latest of Xiaomi’s air purifier models are the Mi Air Purifier 3. It has a sleek appearance with a tall and slim structure. This rectangular box has a white-coloured matte finish good quality plastic body with minimal ornamentation and a mesh on all the sides. The purified air comes out of the square grille on the top. It fits in perfectly with any modern decor. It is very lightweight (4.8 kg) and is designed to save space. The innovative design also allows consistent airflow.

The Mi Air Purifier 3 has a 360┬░ air intake capability and supports a 3-layer composite filtration process, featuring a True HEPA H13 Class filter. First, a carbon pre-filter effectively captures the dust and other significantly large particles. This helps the HEPA filter to not get clogged up. The HEPA then comes into action. It can remove up to 99.97% of smoke, spores and other fine dust particles as small as 0.3 microns. The activated carbon layer then removes odour-causing organic compounds from the air and also harmful gases, thus giving you pure and fresh air to breathe.

It comes with a centrifugal fan and a brushless motor which makes it possible to deliver 6333 litres of clean air per minute, which is a much larger output, compared to either Mi Air Purifier 2 or 2S.

This air purifier can perform extremely well in a room of about 484 sqft and has a high Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 380 m3/h.

Mi Air Purifier 3 has a special OLED touch display which not only lets you control the purification modes, but also shows you the real-time PM 2.5 level, the room temperature and humidity, and the WiFi status.

You can control the settings of this smart air purifier with your smartphone. You can also connect it to Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant and take full advantage of the command feature since this model does not come with a remote.

The operational noise of this purifier is generally whisper-like. It becomes fairly loud when the fan speed is at maximum. But the night mode feature effectively rules out the noise. Also, the filter needs to be replaced every 3-6 months, depending upon the air quality in your location.

You might face a little problem while trying to connect the purifier to the WiFi in one go. Sometimes it takes 2-3 trials.

Mi Air Purifier 2C

Mi Air Purifier 2C

Mi launched the Air Purifier 2C in October 2019. It is actually an affordable take on the Mi Air Purifier 2S. It has been designed exclusively for India, keeping in mind the rising pollution levels. This purifier has a built-in infrared sensor that detects pollution levels while purifying the air, and real-time tri-colour LED indicator that changes it’s colour from Red (severe pollution level), to Orange (medium pollution level), to Green (low pollution level) to indicate the air quality.

The sleek appearance of Mi air purifiers is retained in this model. The body is made of white-coloured good quality plastic with a grey top and bottom. The mesh cover on all four sides allows for 360┬░ air intake. The impure air that is drawn in goes through a dual filtration process. An initial pre-filter catches the larger impurities, after which the air goes through a True HEPA filter with PM2.5 reduction that frees the air from 99.97% of harmful airborne pollutants. This includes dust, smoke, bacteria, viruses, mould spores, pet dander, and other allergens that are as fine as 0.3 microns.

The pure air is forced out through the top of the machine. Mi 2C has a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) of 350m3/h and is efficient to clean the air in an area of 452 sqft. This enables the air purifier to clean the air in a room in about 10 minutes.

One major advantage of the Mi Air Purifier 2C is the DIY (Do it yourself) filter change feature. The process is so easy that you can do it all by yourself without even the slightest technical knowledge. Thus you no longer have to incur the cost of calling a technician at home.

This purifier does not generally create a loud operational noise. But as the speed of the fan is increased, the noise level might rise to 63 dB. This too is not very loud, but it subsides as soon as the pollution level goes down in the room.

Due to the dip in price, Mi has cut down on some beneficial features that were present in the Mi Air Purifier 2S. It no longer has an OLED touch display, and it also cannot be connected to the Mi Home App. Thus you can no longer check the accurate pollution level of the air in your house.

This purifier does not come with a carbon filter, which is why it cannot rid the air of odours. But the filter of Mi 2C is compatible with Mi 2S. Thus you can buy a carbon filter along with this model, and attach it for effective cleansing of the air.

Honeywell Air Touch A5 Air Purifier

Honeywell Air Touch A5 Air Purifier

The globally trusted brand Honeywell is known for its innovative products. It has been recognized in India quite recently for its high quality, budget-friendly air purifiers. The Honeywell Air Touch A5 Air Purifier is an entry-level model in the low budget series of the company.

It has an award-winning, elegant, sophisticated and minimalist design with a plain white body. The rounded edges ensure child safety. The vents on either side and at the bottom of the purifier enhance the suction of the impure air. With it’s 3D Air Flow mechanism, the filtered air can reach the farthest corners of the room.

This air purifier has a three-stage advanced purification process that can effectively remove 99% pollutants from the air. A pre-filter removes larger dust particles, soil, hair, pet dander and other impurities as small as PM10. The HEPA filter then removes the remaining microscopic impurities like allergens and pollens that are as minuscule as 0.3 microns and also PM2.5 particles. It also has an activated carbon filter that eliminates toxic gases, formaldehyde, VOCs and all odour-causing volatile substances from the air, thus giving you safe and fresh smelling air to breathe.

The Honeywell Air Touch A5 offers touch controls. It has an LED air quality indicator that changes colours to alert you about the quality of the air you are inhaling. It has three colours- blue for clean air, orange for medium quality air and red for poor quality air. You also have an option to set the fan speed on low, medium or high.

In that case, the filter will work for about 3-4 months, after which you will have to replace it. You can get the filter on Amazon.

And when the unit runs at full speed, the noise level rises to 63 dB. Thus it is not best suited for your bedroom at night.

Due to the absence of a Real-Time digital air quality indicator, you never get to know the actual level of air pollution in your room. It is recommended that you purchase a humidifier with this model, otherwise you might suffer from the dry nose all day long.

Among them is the Sharp FP-F40E-W Air Purifier which is equipped with a unique ‘Plasmacluster Technology’.

It has a dual purification system that consists of an ‘active’ Plasmacluster mechanism and a ‘passive’ HEPA filtration. The mesh pre-filter traps the pollutants that are comparatively larger, hence increasing the life of the HEPA filter. The voluminous granular activated carbon filter or charcoal layer removes all organic gaseous impurities including smoke and chemical fumes, thereby enhancing the fresh smell of the air. The True HEPA H14 class filter then eliminates 99.97% of all dust, smoke, pet dander, pollen and other minuscule impurities as fine as 0.3 microns from the air.

The Plasmacluster ions neutralize VOCs and other toxic gases, they destroy the static charge due to which dust like impurities stick on to various surfaces. It kills microbes and disease-causing viruses and bacteria like the H1N1 virus, E. Coli, TB and others. It also comes with the benefit of hydrating the skin and improving its texture.

With a high Clear Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 240 m3/h, this purifier can efficiently clean the air in a 200 sqft room, four times in an hour. The unique 20┬░ Airflow feature also allows the purifier to clean the air from the roof to the floor, without missing any corner.

The Auto-Restart option enables the purifier to restart itself as soon as the power supply is resumed after a power cut. In this purifier, you can also set a particular level from the 3 evils of fan speed offered to you – high, medium and low.

This model of Sharp Air Purifiers is provided with an Auto Mode and a manual Haze Mood, which has been specifically designed for Indian conditions. In this mode, the fan speed is at the highest and has been devised to clean a room faster. Though the machine generally creates very low noise, but in this mode, the noise and the power consumption levels, both rise.

You have an option to set the purifier on Sleep Mode every night which ensures a disturbance-free sleep. The LED lights are turned off in this mode and you can also set a timer for the running time of the purifier after which will automatically stop once the timer ends.

KENT Aura Room Air Purifier

 Air Purifier

KENT is generally known for its RO water purifiers, but it has also launched a budget-friendly range of air purifiers that use high-quality HEPA filters and come with various useful features.

The KENT Aura Room Air Purifier falls under this range and does deliver what it promises.

It has a sleek white exterior with a floral motif of either pink or blue on the removable front panel. This adds to the aesthetics of any room. The colour of the motif usually depends on availability.

This removable panel hides from sight the multilayered filters used in the filtration process.

The KENT Aura Room Air Purifier has a 4 stage filtration process. First, a pre-filter trap and removes comparatively larger suspended particles like pet dander, dust, and sand from the air.

A specially treated carbon filter, with a honeycomb structure, is responsible for eliminating volatile organic compounds or VOCs that emit odour. This enhances the freshness of the air.

The Antibacterial HEPA filter then removes 99.9% of harmful PM2.5 and SPM pollutants from the air, that as fine as 0.3 microns. This layer ensures that the air in your room is free from all hazardous impurities.

After this process, the in-built ionizer further freshens up the indoor air by releasing negatively charged ions into it. These ions then force the pollutants to stick to any surface or combine with dust particles and become larger so that they can be trapped inside the pre-filter.

A major disadvantage of the ionizer is the formation of ozone as a by-product. Ozone generally causes lung irritations and is not good for asthma patients. Thus it is recommended that you first check if the ionizer suits you and your family.

There is a soft touch silver button panel at the flat head of the purifier. This has the controllers and the indicators. It is equipped with an LED air quality indicator that blinks purple when the pollution level is very high, turns solid purple when the pollution level dips down to an average and turns blue if the air is clean.

You can also select a fan speed depending upon your needs and a sleep timer effectively runs the purifier and shuts off the process automatically when you are asleep. A one-touch child lock feature ensures that no settings are changed without your prior notice.

To maintain the quality of the air purifier, you need to vacuum-clean the pre-filter regularly. The carbon and the HEPA filters have a life of about 7 months, after which you will have to call technicians to remove and replace it with new ones.

The body of the purifier does not seem to be sturdy. With daily use, the purifier starts making a humming noise every time it is switched on. Also, the LED air quality colour indicators might start faltering after a period of time.

This air purifier uses AeraSense technology to determine Real-Time Air Quality. Not only does it show the air pollution level in numbers, but also has a 4 step LED colour indicator that changes its colour to indicate the level of impurities in the air.

You have the option to switch between 2 useful auto modes. The Bacteria and Virus Mode most effectively reduce the presence of these microorganisms in the air and boosts the airflow and increase the air exchange per hour. The Allergen Mode gives an extra boost to airflow to instantly reduce the risk of allergens and pollens to a minimum, whenever you dust the room or change the bed covers.

The Philips AC2887 comes with a Healthy Air Protect alert that notifies you about a filter change.

If you do not change the filter within 14 days of the notification, the air purifier automatically stops working to ensure that it does not deliver impure air.

The filters come with thin covers that protect them from outwardly damage. Before you start the purifier, it is recommended that you remove these covers. Otherwise, the purifier might produce a continuous rattling sound.

It can remove up to 99.18% of allergens and can filter impurities as fine as 0.3 microns and other PM2.5 particles.

It has a contemporary and sleek exterior. The front cover is a plain white one, with a light blue coloured lining on three sides. It is of compact size and is portable and can fit easily in a room with modern-day decor.

The Odour and Smoke technology used by Havells Freshia AP-20, can detect a cooking smell, smoke, and all sorts of odour-causing toxics gases and rule them out, providing your family with fresh air.

This purifier has a Sleep Mode that lowers the noise level and dims all lights and indicators present in the machine to make the environment comfortable for sleep.

The AP-20 has a moderate clear air delivery rate of 180 m3/h, which makes it unsuitable for big rooms. There is no display that shows the Real-Time Air Quality, thus it becomes impossible to know if the LED colour indicator is malfunctioning. With long term use, the functioning of the air purifier no longer remains smooth. The remotes also tend to disturb. Unlike most modern-day branded air purifiers, it has no app integration, due to which it cannot be connected to any of the virtual assistants and this serves as a major drawback.

American Micronic AMI-AP1-22Dx Air Purifier

American Micronic AMI-AP1-22Dx Air Purifier

If you are looking for an air purifier suitable for small and compact rooms with innovative, top-quality useful features, then you might consider taking a look at the American Micronic AMI-AP1-22Dx Air Purifier.

This small but effective purifier supports a multi-stage filtration process with ionizer that promises to deliver clean air that keeps your family healthy. The air is passed through a triple compound filter that is made of a pre-filter, a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter.

The pre-filter enhances the longevity of the HEPA filter by trapping the larger pollutants like dust, sand, pollen, lint, etc that are suspended in the impure air. The air then passes through the HEPA filter. This filter removes 99.97% of airborne impurities that are as fine as 0.3 microns. These include the PM10 and PM2.5, bacteria, viruses, pet dander and other harmful microorganisms. This filter does not let fine impurities infiltrate the processed air and thereby keeps the lungs safe. The activated carbon filter then eliminates oil vapours, toxic gases, VOCs like formaldehyde and ammonia, hydrocarbons and all odour-causing organic compounds.

After this, an in-built ionizer attracts positively charged leftover pollutants by releasing negative ions in the air. Anions are also capable of lowering stress. Thus the resultant air that you receive is not only clean and fresh but even relaxing! You can also turn the ionizer off just with the touch of a button.

This air purifier has a unique design featuring vents on both sides of the body to maximizes airflow. It has an ivory-coloured plastic body with a grey coloured top. Here you will find the touch-sensitive black finish control panel. On it, there is a power switch, an ionizer button, a fan speed controller along with a Sleep Mode button and a manual timer. These buttons are illuminated so you can easily spot them in the dark.

You can switch between 3 convenient fan speeds or airflow, depending upon your needs. It also has a Sleep Mode that operates the purifier in a whisper-like manner, in turn providing you with peaceful sleep.

The American Micronic AMI-AP1-22Dx lets you set a timer for 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours after which it will automatically stop the operation.

The maintenance is a bit tricky. You cannot wash the pre-filter but have to replace it over time. The HEPA filter, on the other hand, can be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner. But the maintenance cost is nominal.

Buying Guide for Air Purifiers in India 2020

Purchasing an electrical appliance like air purifiers become a really confusing affair when there are too many options. There are a lot of factors that you need to look into before selecting the most suitable air purifier for your home.

We have tried to list the most important aspects.

Filtration technology

The most important thing about an air purifier is the filtration technology it uses. The basic purification process constitutes of 3 filters, namely a pre-filter, an advanced filter for capturing ultra-fine pollutants and a carbon filter that eliminates toxic gases and foul smell.

If an air purifier lacks any of the three, then chances are it is not as efficient as it claims to be. With these basic filters in place, each brand uses more innovative and effective filters that have unique qualities. There are antibacterial, anti-allergen and other filters that have specific uses. So you have to choose accordingly.

Quality of filters

Most high quality branded air purifiers use HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters that are extremely effective in capturing minuscule impurities as fine as 0.3 microns. There are various types of these HEPA filters like the H13, H14, etc. with individual micron levels.

You have to make sure that the filter used is a True HEPA filter, only then can it be trusted. These filters also come with a variety of layers that have unique purposes. The filter must compulsorily be able to remove PM2.5 particles from the air.

Area coverage

Each air purifier offers a different coverage area. You need to select one depending upon the size of your room. This feature is linked with the Clean Air Delivery Rate or CADR of the purifier.

If the air purifier has a large effective coverage area but a small CADR, then it will take a very long time to clean the air in the room. Thus you need to purchase a purifier that has a balanced effective coverage area and CADR.

App integration and smart device connectivity

Most of the modern air purifiers are equipped with an app with the help of which you can monitor the whole operation. This allows you to control the settings even when you are away from home. These apps have features that alert you about filter changes making it easier for you to maintain the air purifier.

Many of these air purifiers can nowadays be connected to virtual assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, Amazon Echo and others. This allows you to control the purifier with voice commands.

Quiet Operation

If you are looking for an air purifier for your bedroom is has to be one that generates the lowest possible noise. There are purifiers that operate at 60-63 dB, which is not at all convenient for sleeping.

There are others though that offer a very low noise level of about 20 dB. Purifiers also come with a Sleep or Night Mode that generates low noise and lets your family sleep well.

Easy maintenance

If you invest in an air purifier you will obviously not want to incur a recurring maintenance cost that is very high. Thus you need to look for purifiers with filters that have good longevity and can be vacuum cleaned for months. Also, most pre-filters are washable, thus you don’t have to keep replacing them regularly.

Also, there are filters that have a DIY replacement feature. This helps you cut down on the cost of calling a technician to help you with the servicing.

Pollution level of your locality

The maintenance cost and filter life change abruptly with the changes in pollution level. If you live in a highly polluted metropolitan city like Delhi, none of the purifiers will offer you a very long life. So depending upon the place you live, you have to invest in powerful purifiers.

Price

When you have selected the features you need in an air purifier, the price becomes the deciding factor. It is recommended that whatever your budget is, you should go through the features offers by air purifiers of various brands in the same price range.

Only after a thorough comparison should you select the best for yourself.

How do Air Purifiers work?

Due to the ever-increasing pollution curve of the country, air purifiers are gradually becoming an important part of every household.

You can find a variety of air purifiers in the market but each of them focuses on providing clean and healthy air for your family.

So how does the process work?

Each air purifier has vents that draw in the impure air present in the room. The air once inside is passed through many levels of filters to finally become pure and safe.

Firstly, there exists a mesh pre-filter which is much like those present in an air conditioner. This filter is responsible for trapping in it the large suspended air pollutants like dust, dirt, sand, pet hair and dander, and also PM10 particulates. If this filter would not have been present, the life of the other advanced filters inside the purifier would have dipped down.

Then comes the advanced filter. Most good quality air purifiers use a True HEPA filter that is highly efficient. This filter removes the ultrafine and minuscule impurities that float in the air. These impurities include PM2.5, PM0.1, pollens, allergens, harmful bacteria and viruses, and other very fine airborne pollutants. This is the most important layer of filters.

After this comes to an activated carbon filter. This filter ensures that you get to breathe air that is fresh and not at all smelly. It eliminates toxic gaseous impurities like formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia and other odour-causing organic compounds.

The air that you get after this filtration process is pure and healthy and is safe for your lungs.

If all air purifiers have the same filtration process, then why are they priced differently? This is mostly because of the quality of the filters they use. Moreover, each brand has their patented unique filters and layers along with these basic ones. This changes the price of the products.

Types of Air Purifiers

Air Purifiers are not only of a single type. Their types depend upon the kind of filters used. Even here, you have an array of options to choose from.

The HEPA filter technology

This is the most common type of air purifier. HEPA standards for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. It is usually made of foam, fibreglass, cotton or any other particle trapping material. The human eye can see only particles that are larger than 10 microns.

But these filters are capable of efficiently trapping 99.97% of impurities that as fine as 0.3 microns. You can clean these filters with vacuum cleaners but they will have to be replaced every 4-6 months, due to the layer of pollutants that remain stuck in the filter.

UV lights technology

Air purifiers which use UV technology to eliminate germs have a UV lamp installed inside them. This UV lamp radiates UV layers that can kill all harmful and toxic microorganisms. But this technology cannot be used independently.

It is best if there are HEPA filters used before the air is exposed to the UV rays. Otherwise, cleansing is not very effective.

Ionizers

Ionizers produce negatively charged ions and release them into the air. These anions attract the positively charged pollutants, makes them heavier and forces them to stick to the surface of the floor, furniture, or walls. This makes the air clear from floating impurities and is good for your lungs.

But, as a by-product of this process, the ionizers release ozone gas which is harmful, thus air purifiers which use ionizers have the option to switch it off. These also cannot be used independently, and need HEPA filters to initially clean the impure air.

Activated carbon technology

As mentioned earlier, an activated carbon filter can effectively eliminate VOCs and other toxic gases from the air. It is also capable of removing odour-causing organic compounds, thereby freshening the air around you. The impure air needs to be cleaned before being passed through an activated carbon filter.

Electrostatic Technology

Electrostatic filters kill the germs, microbes, viruses, bacteria and other particulate impurities that are collected in the air purifier. Thus they prevent these pollutants from later mixing into the filtered air.
